ALDI special buys travel essentials: Why I don’t want the carry-on

This weekend’s ALDI special buys include “Travel Essentials”. I’m a luggage addict, especially for carry-on gear, and I always check out what’s on offer when this offer comes up, which is usually twice a year.

The latest batch includes a bunch of suitcase models and a few bits of travel tech. As usual, my eye is drawn to the carry-on bag, which is priced at $44.99.

The pricing and quality is what you’d generally expect from ALDI: a little better and cheaper than Kmart or Big W, but not matching a top-tier luggage brand. But despite that, I’m not tempted.

Why not? One simple reason: the weight. The ALDI case weighs in at 2.28kg.

While that’s not particularly heavy for a wheeled carry-on bag, it’s too heavy for me. Cut-price airlines (hello Jetstar!) rigorously enforce the 7kg limit for a carry-on bag. I don’t want to waste too much of that on the bag itself.

So normally for carry-on I’ll go for a backpack. And if I do want to take a wheeled case for some reason – perhaps to check shopping from the trip in the hold on the return flight, which I’ve done once or twice – I already have a benchmark: an IKEA suitcase I bought a few years back.

This is a super-basic bag, but it weighs in at just 1.75kg. So any other case that size is going to need to weigh less than that to attract my interest.
