ALDI special buys Rubik’s cube knock-off is quite a good deal

ALDI’s special buys for Wednesday 12 April 2024 are not particularly inspiring. The British Foods category is largely loaded with stuff you can routinely buy at Coles or Woolworths, where it often goes on special as well. Those sickos who like prawn cocktail crisps might want to get excited, but for the rest of us, there’s nothing to see here.

The Kids Entertainment category is also bland. But I did spot, in its $5.99 “Duncan Assorted Fidget Toys” listing, one potentially interesting item: a Quick Cube.

This is, as you can see, a Rubik’s cube. It’s not called that, because Duncan is not paying to license the name, but that’s what it does.

I’ve actually used this cube, and it’s not bad at all. It does have a smoother motion than a standard (official) Rubik’s, and it’s way better than the el cheapo $2 ones you’ll find in bargain stores everywhere. I’d also bet a large sum of money that it has a better mechanism than the infamous Spice Girls cube.

And $5.99 is a decently discounted price. Amazon, for instance, is selling the same cube for $9.98.

So if your house is cubeless (shame), it might be worth considering. Just one caveat: the colours are not identical to the classic red/blue/green/yellow/orange/white of the original, and the white piping between blocks gives it a very different look. So it’s good for cubing, but not quite so good at scratching your nostalgic itch.
