ALDI special buys: Will Darrell Lea wear the Dolmio grin?

ALDI’s latest special buys for 31 July 2024 include ‘Familiar Favourites’, that popular category where brand name goods go on sale for the same price you’d see them on sale at other supermarkets if you’re paying attention. Two brands jump out at me, both starting with D: Darrell Lea and Dolmio.

I’m a liquorice bullets nut, so I have to pay attention to 400g of Mixed Raspberry Bullets for $6.99:

How good a deal is that? The regular price at Woolworths or Coles for 204g of standard raspberry bullets is $5.50. That said, they regularly go on special.

Indeed, in the week just passed, Coles had a 2 for $8 deal and Woolworths was charging $4 a packet. That’s more than the $7 price at ALDI, but not heaps more.

Even more notable: this week Coles was selling the identical mixed box for $7 – the same price ALDI is promoting.

So it’s the same story we always see. With brand-name goods, ALDI scores specials that are competitive – but probably not worth a separate trip.

It’s a similar story with the Dolmio Bolognese Extra Pasta Sauce 500g, which ALDI is selling for $2.79 this week:

The standard retail price for this is $4.60. But again, this week (until Tuesday) Coles had it for $2.75 – a little lower than ALDI.

Competition matters, and shopping around matters. But for major brands, if there’s a special at one supermarket this week, it will be on rotation to the others soon enough. This much we know.
