So there’s a newly-announced official Whitney Houston Barbie, and it looks pretty good. It features the purple tank dress she wore in the ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) video, which I’d say is probably Whitney’s best-known look.
My only complaint? The pricing.
In the States, the recommended retail price is $US60. At current exchange rates, that should translate to an Australian price of $85. I could understand it rounding up to $90.
But on the official Australian Mattel site, it’s a whopping $109. And adding insult to injury, you have to pay $20 in postage.
Mattel offers free postage if you spend $120, so throwing in a pack of UNO cards might make sense, I guess. But that price is still too high.
Shopping around doesn’t help either. Amazon Australia has the doll, but ships it from the UK, and the price is . . . $129. Identical to Mattel’s price with postage. Very questionable, but not as dodgy as the eBay listing showing it for $US109. So for now, I’m passing.
