ALDI vs IKEA: Which glass display cabinet is cheaper?

Amongst the ‘Entertainment’ themed options in this week’s first batch of ALDI special buys (on sale 14 August 2024), this glass cabinet caught my attention.

It measures 162cm high by 42.5cm wide by 36.5cm deep, and weighs in at a trolley-busting 40kg, complete with built-in lock. At $99.99, it’s pretty keenly priced.

My immediate thought was: how does it compare with what’s currently on offer at IKEA? It’s the obvious competitor, but having owned my own glass IKEA cabinets for years, I’m not sure what the current range costs.

On investigation, ALDI does come in a little larger and a little cheaper. There are a few obvious IKEA possibilities, but none is quite this size, or quite this cheap.

The most obvious competitor is the $139 BLÅLIDEN, which is a similar size (151cm by 35cm by 32cm). It doesn’t include a lock though. If you want that you’ll need the $179 RUDSTA (which can have a padlock added) or the $199 FABRIKÖR, which does have a lock built in.

If you’re happy with something smaller, the $49 BAGGEBO measures 116cm by 34cm by 40cm. I’ve assembled a bunch of these, and they’re a solid product, especially now they’re down from $69. No lock though.

Ultimately, though, ALDI wins on price for the direct comparison.

The one downside? A 40kg package really would be a nuisance to get home. On that front, IKEA’s delivery options are definitely welcome.
