One of the themes in ALDI’s special buys for Wednesday 3 July 2024 is “Italian Food”. I’m always up for a bit of that, and the item that jumps out at me is the 190g jar of Barilla Pesto alla Genovese.
This is my go-to when I fancy a bit of pesto, and I’m not alone in that thinking. In a comparison of supermarket pestos, the Guardian crew rated this as the top pick, giving it 8.5 out of 10.
The $3.99 price tag is also good, given that the normal price at Woolworths or Coles is $5.
That’s not to say it’s uniquely good. A couple of weeks ago, Woolworths had a 2 jars for $8 deal, which is effectively the same. This week, Coles had the price down to $4.40 – not quite as good, but better than full price.
Ultimately, much as we’ve seen before with Twisties and Barbecue Shapes and Tim Tams, this ALDI deal is as cheap as it gets, but not meaningfully cheaper than anywhere else if you shop around and wait for specials.
Final note: if you’re really feeling cheap, ALDI’s own-brand basil pesto under the Remano brand was ranked by the Guardian as best value. Maybe I’ll pick up a jar as well and do a comparison of my own.
