ALDI special buys: Smith’s Fun Faves are actually cheaper this year

OK, you don’t see this too often. Amongst ALDI’s special buys this week (from Wednesday 28 August 2024) is a 60-pack of Smith’s ‘Fun Faves’, also often known and labelled as ‘Mega Mix’, for $20.99 (or $1.84/100g for unit pricing fans).

The main reason this is notable is because ALDI had an identical deal a year ago (almost to the day), but it was charging $21.99 then ($1.93/100g).

It’s not often that happens. This year we’ve seen an ALDI special buy on pegs with identical pricing to 2023. And we’ve seen its vinyl records get more expensive while remaining just as crappy (not that that seems to stop folks buying them). But a genuine price cut? That’s something to celebrate.

As was the case last year, this deal is cheaper than the 20-pack which Coles and Woolworths sell, which comes in at $8.90 ($2.42/100g). Even with a just-wrapping “2 for $15” deal at Coles, that’s more expensive.

To be fair, there are different boxes available in the 20-pack, so you might find something you prefer (Burger Rings, anyone?). But it won’t be cheaper.

And as ever, if you’re properly frugal (and environmental), you’ll buy a big single back of crisps/snacks/corn chips, dole them out into containers, and ignore this deal entirely.

Doubtless one reason ALDI can pull this off is that, as I’ve documented before, Smith’s actually makes ALDI’s own store-brand Sprinters crisps.
