I’ve whined before about ABBA’s overpriced approach to merchandise. Now the savvy Swedes are at it again.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s legendary self-titled album, the one with ‘Mamma Mia’ on it that proved they weren’t just Eurovision one-and-a-bit-hit wonders. So as expected, there’s a bunch of new tatt on offer via the official store.
I’ve never been interested in the half-speed vinyl singles that form the backbone of these anniversary campaigns (I’m a CD addict, after all). But I was momentarily tempted by the ‘Intermezzo No.1’-themed sweater. It’s tasteful, it’s stripey, it’s a little bit obscure.
Then I saw the price: $219. That’s a lot for a poly-cotton sweatshirt made in China. ABBA merchandise is decent quality, but that’s still more than I want to pay for a piece of clothing.
That price is in Australian dollars, and it does include free shipping (because it’s so expensive in the first place). But I can’t see myself biting on this one, so I’ll let its mid-June release just pass through my room.
